Formality

Whe writing an essay, It is important to be appropriately formal. There are a few things to avoid when writing formally.

Contractions

When writing formally, avoid using contractions. e.g. didn't, they're, wasn't, can't.

Instead, write out both words fully.

e.g. did not, they are, was not, can not.

Colloquialims or Slang

Colloquialisms (also known as slang) is a casual way of speaking. When witing formally, slang should be avoided.

e.g. sup, yo

Expressions

In formal writing, expressions are usually avoided. This is not absolutely necessary, however many expressions are informal and therefore should be avoided.
